Noise in the Aviation Sector

For aircraft, numerous measures are jointly implemented by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), manufacturers, airlines, and airport operators with the aim of continuously minimizing aircraft noise nuisances.

On the manufacturers' side, technological advancements in engines allow modern aircraft to generate 20 dB* less noise than their predecessors built thirty years ago.

On the airlines' side, fees adjusted according to the noise level of the fleet incentivize them to equip themselves with even newer aircraft. Research programs have been implemented to achieve a target of 5 to 10 decibels less noise compared to older generation aircraft.

Actions implemented at the airport:

  • No regular flights at night.
  • Prohibition of operating the loudest aircraft classified as "Chapter 2" at the airport (see aircraft acoustics established by the International Civil Aviation Organization).

*Noise, caused by a physical phenomenon, is a collection of sounds perceived as lacking harmony. It is measured in decibels (dB), with dB(A) used to establish a scale of human ear sensitivity. In aviation, noise measurement is performed using a sound level meter or a measurement and analysis system. Sounds audible to humans range between 0 and 140 dB, with the threshold of pain occurring around 120 dB. More information on noise measurement can be found here.
